Rowntree Mackintosh (who Nestlé bought in 1988) launched YORKIE in as a bid to enter the solid chocolate block market. Rowntree’s had been among the market leaders of block chocolate makers back in the 1920s with their York chocolate range. Advertised by the eponymous Plain Mr York cartoon, the York brand fell out of favour after the Second World War, and the line was dropped in 1966.

Had it not been not been for associations with the Second World War, the YORKIE® bar would have been called ‘Rations’. However, ‘Rations’ was eventually abandoned due to its association with wartime austerity.
YORKIE® was launched in 1976 by Rowntree's of York hence the name.
YORKIE® Pro launched in September 2017. The bar contains 10.5g of protein and features a combination of protein-enriched milk chocolate and wheat protein crispies. As a result of adding wheat protein crispies to the recipe YORKIE® Pro contains 35% less sugar and fewer calories per 100g than the standard YORKIE bar.
YORKIE® sold in the UK and Ireland are produced using certified sustainable cocoa, sourced through the Nestlé Cocoa Plan.
