In this latest episode of Footprint's Sustainability Bites podcast, in association with Nestlé Professional, Footprint Editorial Director Nick Hughes speaks to Joe Barrett, Regenerative Agriculture Manager at Nestlé UK & Ireland, about why regenerative agriculture is becoming increasingly important for the future of food production.

Against a backdrop of extreme weather, rising input costs and growing pressure on food supply chains, the conversation explores how regenerative farming can help build more resilient agricultural systems while supporting climate goals.

Building resilience from the ground up

Changing weather patterns are already affecting UK agriculture, with drought conditions and heatwaves leading to reduced crop yields and added pressure on farmers. Joe shares his thoughts about how regenerative farming practices can improve soil health and water retention and are increasingly proving their value to help farms withstand these challenges.

While further data is needed, there’s emerging evidence to suggest farms adopting regenerative practices may be better equipped to cope with extreme weather, protecting productivity and profitability.

Collaboration is key

The importance of collaboration is clear, with industry-wide initiatives such as the Sustainable Agriculture Initiative's (SAI) Regenerating Together Framework playing an important role to help bring greater alignment to regenerative agriculture programmes, while maintaining flexibility for farmers.

The episode also touches on topics like blended finance, practical farmer support and knowledge sharing to help de-risk the transition to regenerative farming.

It shares real life examples of farmers and supply chain partners working together to scale regenerative agriculture. Our long-running Milk Plan partnership with First Milk, which combines financial incentives, technical support and farmer-to-farmer learning is discussed, as well as our recent collaboration with Wildfarmed to supply regeneratively grown wheat for UK-produced KitKats.
