When working in a fast-paced environment, it is easy to become overwhelmed. Luckily, there are plenty of employee wellbeing programmes that help promote the awareness of mental health in the workplace, as well as ensure all employees are well looked after.  

Here are four tips to help you improve employee wellbeing and staff morale. 

1. Team building exercises 

Employee wellbeing can be improved by creating a sense of community in the workforce. When employees feel a sense of belonging and camaraderie with their colleagues, they tend to be much happier at work1. Employee wellbeing programmes that include team-building exercises are a fun way to build relationships between employees and help them to foster valuable skills such as communication and collaboration.  

Providing colleagues with the opportunity to have breaks during the team-building exercises can enhance their problem-solving and productivity skills, whilst simultaneously allowing employees to bond over a coffee or tea. 

2. Flexibility in the workplace 

Post-pandemic, employees are looking for more flexibility in when, where and how they work. Flexible working patterns are considered great workplace incentives for many employees2, making it an easy way for employers to boost morale. Flexibility at work can reduce stress for parents and caregivers in particular, allowing them to keep working and boosting their productivity and morale if they know they can get their work done around their other responsibilities. 

3. Support staff mental health 

Mental health has been enormously impacted by the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, from general stress and worry to social isolation, bereavement and health anxiety. Therefore, wellness programmes for employees that focus on mental health are becoming more and more important in the workplace. 32% of employees want to see more mental health support from their employers over the next 12 months3.  

Employers should focus on offering training and appointing mental health first aiders to champion positive mental health in the workplace and offer support during times of crisis. A workforce that feels supported by their employer is much happier and more productive. 

4. Policies to increase diversity and inclusion 

Introducing more diversity and inclusion to your workplace is a vital employee wellbeing initiative. When a workplace encourages employees to express themselves and their unique perspectives, employees feel happier and safer at work4. Diversity and inclusion policies show that the workplace cares about the wellbeing of its employees and creates a safe space where employees can feel proud to work.  

This can include providing accommodations for employees with accessibility needs such as wheelchair ramps, ergonomic desk chairs, programs to reduce eye strain, and standing desks. Other employees may need longer deadlines, or to be able to work from home more often. By allowing for the diverse needs of your employees, you can ensure they do not overstretch themselves or burn out. 

Why are employee wellbeing programmes important? 

Taking care of the overall wellbeing of your staff is key in promoting a positive work environment.  When employees are happy, they are much more productive, work better together as a team and are better able to contribute to the overall business performance.
