We have been shortlisted for five Footprint Awards as part of our commitment to sustainability
We’re delighted to be shortlisted for a total of 5 awards at the 2023 Footprint Awards.
Sustainable Supplier (NESCAFÉ® 2030 Plan)
Through the NESCAFÉ® 2030 Plan, we are engaged in sustainable coffee projects that help drive regenerative agriculture, reduce greenhouse gas emissions and improve farmers’ livelihoods across the entire value chain.
We’re incredibly proud to have achieved tangible results through the Plan, including the distribution of 250 million new coffee plantlets to coffee farmers since 2010, as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions and water usage in soluble coffee factories by 46% and 53% respectively.
Environmentally Efficient Logistics (Own Fleet Bio-LNG)
We’re delighted that 75% of Nestlé’s UK Own fleet has been converted to vehicles which utilise Bio-LNG Fuel. This comes as part of our commitment to reduce emissions by 20% before 2025. It’s an incredible achievement that’s resulted in a CO2 reduction of approximately 50 Tons in 2022 alone, all while maintaining operational continuity and excellent customer service.
Sustainable Use of Natural Resources ( NESCAFÉ® Gold Blend Alta Rica carbon reduction)
We’re on a journey to maintain the taste and quality people have known to come and love from NESCAFÉ® Gold Blend Alta Rica, whilst reducing its impact on the environment. Three sourcing initiatives were completed between 2018 and 2021 as part of this journey, including optimising our green coffee use; eliminating sourcing from areas of deforestation in Honduras; reducing the carbon footprint of our recipe; and committing to extra certification steps for further consumer reassurance, which led to being granted the Carbon Trust Footprint label for two years. These actions delivered an 8% reduction in CO2 across the business.
We’re also proud to be part of some impactful projects this year, including regenerative farming activities such as re-forestation in Colombia and fertilizer optimisation for soil biodiversity protection in Brazil. We know from research that these more tangible activities resonate highly with consumers so we look forward to seeing how this phase of our sustainability journey continues to accelerate the reduction of CO2.
Sustainability in Education (Toque d’Or 2023)
Sustainability has been a key focus for our Toque d’Or® hospitality competition over the years. We take great pride in ensuring the competitors – both students and apprentices – get the opportunity to learn and develop key skills in areas such as sustainable farming (including regenerative agriculture), local sourcing, seasonality, the impact of food waste and supporting local communities. It’s part of our commitment to show young people the breadth of career opportunities the hospitality industry has to offer, as well as helping them understand how vital sustainable practice is to the sector.
Social Impact & Diversity (Promoting hospitality careers)
We’re aware of the challenges the hospitality industry faces with regards to attracting young people into the industry. Through our youth initiatives, Choose Hospitality Pledge and Toque d’Or, we’re passionate about showcasing the breadth of career opportunities in hospitality through a mix of learning, real-life challenges, and engaging careers talks.
Through Toque d’Or alone we have worked with more than 150 colleges nationwide and reached more than 10,000 competitors, with 100 winners announced since its inception. As part of the Choose Hospitality Pledge – which aims to recruit hospitality ambassadors to promote the industry to young people – we want to visit 400 schools in 2023, through the support of partners including Compass, Sodexo, Elior and Creams to name just a few.
