Today the term sustainability seems to span over many topics, and the sustainability in food and beverage industry is adapting to this new way of understanding the economy and how to make positive moves towards a greener future. As a result, there has been a call for global sustainable indexes that are rational, solid and reliable, to allow the evolution of sustainable investments to be monitored as businesses navigate towards better food industry sustainability.

What is The Sustainability Index 2022?

The last few years have driven lasting changes to consumer behaviour, impacting our relationship with food and the businesses that serve it, affecting overall foodservice sustainability. To identify emerging trends, and pinpoint opportunities for foodservice leaders, we have launched a new report: Footprint Sustainability Index 2022. Packed with industry insight and interviews with key influencers, the report aims to help foodservice leaders adapt their business and operations, enabling them to thrive in this newly evolved landscape and to help propel them towards better foodservice sustainability.

Foodservice Sustainability Index Insights

The foodservice sustainability index gives vital recognition to key questions and outlines the answers for a future of forward-thinking food industry sustainability. The sustainability indexes are used to measure the responsibility of certain companies in social and environmental areas.

The food industry sustainability index covers topics such as whether diners are seeking out healthier, more sustainable options to better protect themselves and the planet, and whether the cost-of-living crisis and the rise in supply chain costs will impact their willingness to spend money on greener choices.

How are the foodservice sustainability indexes created?

The index is a tool which assess environmental sustainability of the product and facility level, as well as looking at many impact categories. The scores of each individual impact category are then combined using a weighted average approach. This approach is calculated in such a way to help organisation assess their progress towards their foodservice sustainability goals and to offer them support to reach their sustainability solutions.

Developed in collaboration with Footprint Intelligence, the food industry sustainability report has been created using consumer surveys, industry insight and in-depth industry interviews. Designed to address all of the critical issues faced by the industry, the sustainability index provides insight and recommendations on clients and consumers, sustainable diets, energy, emissions and natural resources. It also provides detailed answers in regards to waste and resources; policy and supply chain; and employee health and wellbeing.

Katya Simmons, our managing director says:

“The foodservice industry is going through unprecedented change. The cost-of-living is rising, supply shortages are impacting prices, and new legislation is being introduced, encouraging operators to rethink labelling, packaging and waste management.”

“Fortunately, foodservice business can reduce costs, comply with legislation and keep consumers happy with effective carbon cutting and resource efficiency. To provide inspiration and actionable advice, we collaborated with Footprint Intelligence to compile this report. We hope that foodservice businesses find it of value; helping them to grow their business while reducing carbon footprint.”

Why are Sustainability Indexes Needed?

The sustainability index is designed and built with the goal of providing complete concepts related to general company sustainability. The objective is to magnify to the public which companies are moving towards, and are already finding their feet, in a new era of food industry sustainability. The more a business takes the aspects of the sustainability index in as they develop their business, the higher the score they will acquire.
